Sipi Falls is a spectacular series of waterfalls situated in the Eastern part of Uganda near the Kenyan border. It is located in Mbale, which is about 220 kilometres away from Kampala. While it may seem far, the drive to Sipi Falls from Kampala is quite beautiful and takes roughly 5 hours by car.
Sipi Falls consists of three waterfalls, each flowing from a different altitude. The highest fall drops from an altitude of 100 meters and is referred to as the main fall since it is the last fall in the series. The other two falls are about 85 meters and 75 meters high respectively. The falls are formed by the Sipi River, which originates from the upper slopes of Mount Elgon and terminates in the Kyoga Basin. The name Sipi comes from the local word sep, which is a name for a wild banana-like indigenous plant that grows along the banks of the river. The plant has medicinal properties and can be used to treat fevers and measles by the local people.
Sipi Falls is not only a natural paradise but also a cultural hub. The area is inhabited by two main ethnic groups: the Bagisu and the Sabiny. The Bagisu live on the Ugandan side of the mountain and practice male circumcision as a rite of passage to adulthood. The circumcision ceremony, known as Imbalu, is held every even year and attracts thousands of visitors who witness the rituals and festivities. The Sabiny live on the Kenyan side of the mountain and practice female circumcision as a tradition. However, this practice has been discouraged by the government and NGOs due to its harmful effects on women’s health.
Sipi Falls offers various activities for visitors who want to experience its beauty and culture. One of the most popular activities is hiking or climbing to the peaks of Mount Elgon. There are several trails that lead to different parts of the mountain, such as the Sasa Trail (the shortest but steepest route), the Sipi Trail (the longest but most scenic route), the Piswa Trail (the gentlest route), and the Suam Trail (the most remote route). Along the way, hikers can enjoy stunning views of the landscape, encounter wildlife and plants, visit caves and hot springs, and interact with local communities.
Another activity that visitors can enjoy is birdwatching. The area has a variety of habitats that support different bird species, making it a birdwatcher’s paradise. Some of the notable birds include the endangered lammergeier (bearded vulture), Jackson’s francolin, Hartlaub’s turaco, Tacazze sunbird, and black-collared apalis.
Other activities that visitors can do in the area include mountain biking, rock climbing, camping, cultural tours, and community walks. The area also has a thriving coffee industry, as the Arabica coffee grown here is considered to be one of the best in Uganda. Visitors can take part in coffee tours and learn about the production process and taste the fresh brew.
Sipi Falls has several facilities and services that cater to the needs of visitors, such as accommodation, restaurants, guides, porters, and information centers. There are options for all budgets and preferences, ranging from luxurious lodges to budget hotels and campsites.
