Mt.Elgon NP

Destination Details

Mt. Elgon National Park Uganda is a national park that lies on the border of Uganda and Kenya, covering an area of 1,279 square kilometres. The park is named after Mt. Elgon, an extinct shield volcano that has the largest volcanic base in the world, measuring 80 kilometres in diameter and rising to 4,321 meters above sea level. Mt. Elgon is also the oldest solitary volcano in East Africa, dating back to about 24 million years ago1. The park offers a variety of attractions and activities for visitors who want to explore its natural and cultural wonders.

CALDERA

One of the main attractions of the park is the caldera, which is the largest intact caldera in the world, measuring 40 kilometres across and 8 kilometres deep. The caldera was formed by the collapse of the volcanic cone after a series of eruptions that occurred between 1.5 and 0.5 million years ago. The caldera is home to several peaks, such as Wagagai (the highest point in Uganda at 4,321 meters), Sudek (4,302 meters), Koitobos (4,222 meters), and Mubiyi (4,211 meters)1. The caldera also contains hot springs, caves, gorges, waterfalls, and crater lakes.

FLORA

Another attraction of the park is the diverse vegetation that ranges from montane forest to moorland. The park has five major vegetation zones that vary with altitude: the lower slopes are dominated by mixed bamboo forest; the middle slopes are covered by podocarpus forest; the upper slopes are characterized by heath and moorland; the caldera floor is dominated by grassland; and the peaks are covered by afro-alpine vegetation. The park hosts over 400 plant species, some of which are endemic or rare, such as Ardisiandra wettsteinii, Carduus afromontanus, Echinops hoehnelii, Ranunculus keniensis, and Romulea keniensis.

WILDLIFE

The park is also rich in wildlife, hosting over 300 bird species and 56 mammal species. Some of the notable birds include the endangered lammergeier (bearded vulture), Jackson’s francolin, Hartlaub’s turaco, Tacazze sunbird, and black-collared apalis. Some of the mammals include elephants, buffaloes, leopards, spotted hyenas, duikers, bushbucks, giant forest hogs, blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and red-tailed monkeys. The park also has a unique population of cave-dwelling elephants that use their tusks to excavate salt-rich rocks in the Kitum Cave.

CULTURAL HERITAGE

The park is not only a natural paradise but also a cultural heritage site. The park is inhabited by two main ethnic groups: the Bagisu and the Sabiny. The Bagisu live on the Ugandan side of the mountain and practice male circumcision as a rite of passage to adulthood. The circumcision ceremony, known as Imbalu, is held every even year and attracts thousands of visitors who witness the rituals and festivities. The Sabiny live on the Kenyan side of the mountain and practice female circumcision as a tradition. However, this practice has been discouraged by the government and NGOs due to its harmful effects on women’s health.

ACTIVITIES

The park offers various activities for visitors who want to experience its beauty and culture. One of the most popular activities is hiking or climbing to the peaks of Mt. Elgon. There are several trails that lead to different parts of the mountain, such as the Sasa Trail (the shortest but steepest route), the Sipi Trail (the longest but most scenic route), the Piswa Trail (the gentlest route), and the Suam Trail (the most remote route). Along the way, hikers can enjoy stunning views of the landscape, encounter wildlife and plants, visit caves and hot springs, and interact with local communities.

Another activity that visitors can enjoy is birdwatching. The park has a variety of habitats that support different bird species, making it a birdwatcher’s paradise. Some of the best spots for birdwatching include Kapkwai Forest Exploration Centre (where one can see forest birds such as turacos and hornbills), Chebonet River (where one can see water birds such as kingfishers and herons), and the caldera (where one can see moorland birds such as sunbirds and francolins).

Other activities that visitors can do in the park include mountain biking, rock climbing, camping, cultural tours, and community walks. The park has several facilities and services that cater to the needs of visitors, such as accommodation, restaurants, guides, porters, and information centers.

Mt. Elgon National Park Uganda is a hidden gem of nature and culture that deserves more recognition and appreciation. It is a place where one can experience the beauty and diversity of the mountain, the wildlife and plants, and the people and traditions. It is a place where one can have an adventure of a lifetime.
